On his new EP ‘Mya’ Felix Rösch meshes a chamber orchestra with shape-shifting, ambient electronics. Lead single ‘Baiji Dolphin’ is OUT NOW and was produced live on YouTube.

Berlin-based composer Felix Rösch offers an insight into his forthcoming EP ‘Mya’ with it’s lead single ‘Baiji Dolphin’ (Out Now). The EP ‘Mya’ (out October 9 on SilentGreen Records) follows 2018’s ‘Orchester Verfremdung’ and 2019’s ‘str:orchestra,’ which was featured in Spotify’s ‘Not Quite Classical’ playlist and used in a global Burberry ad campaign. ‘Mya’ combines shape-shifting analog synthesizers, ethereal piano textures, and a remote-recorded chamber orchestra. It is meant to be a memorial for countless species that have gone extinct.

“I felt completely overwhelmed when I learned about the biological annihilation of wildlife in recent decades and how we’re collectively decimating the only assemblage of life that we know of in the universe. That feeling started this EP. But instead of focussing on that, I wanted to celebrate these extinct animals by creating this little memorial, where each track is dedicated to one of them.” — Felix Rösch

The lead single ‘Baiji Dolphin’ was remote-recorded with string players from all over Europe during the COVID-19 lockdown. It was written and produced in thirteen YouTube live streams, all of which you can watch here. It’s a colorful mixture of analog synthesizers, looped piano phrases, and string textures that spark moments of sacral beauty with a somber, melancholic undercurrent — perfect for fans of Ben Lukas Boysen, Jóhann Jóhannsson or Max Richter.

“If anything this EP is my contribution to raise awareness for this frightening assault on the foundations of human civilization.” Felix states.

The title ‘Mya’ refers to the archeological unit that stands for “million years ago” and is a reminder of the time it took for these species to develop, as opposed to the time it took for them to disappear.

Felix Rösch’s compositions are frequently performed and recorded by world-renowned orchestras like the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg and the WDR Symphony Orchestra & Choir. He has won several international awards and scholarships and his music can be heard in countless theater performances, audiobook soundtracks, and film scores.
